Your Time Can Make A Huge Difference
Our volunteers are an essential part of our team. We welcome everyone who wants to volunteer with us, whether you have specific skills or if you want to just add value to someone who needs your commitment and enthusiasm, which is equally valued. With us your time means that you ensure that all our patients are properly looked after at their most vulnerable time.
We welcome the young and old. Our community service prepares young people for the reality of the working world.
Read what other volunteers say about working at Hospicewits.
While Hospice work takes its toll, it taught me that I could no longer sit back and allow so much suffering. I also learned valuable skills, that I needed to do this work : • Commitment • Dependability • Patience • Listening and being comfortable with silence • Respect for people’s diversity
The Hospice carer and volunteer bathed the patient, fed him, cleaned the room. They made sure that the patient took his medication. What I found reassuring was that when we left the patient’s room smelt clean, while he was too sick to smile his eyes said volumes. That for me was the most gratifying feeling, to know that I had made a real difference.
When I arrived at Patient X’s home little did I know about the what Hospice really does. The patient was alone in a room outside the main house. They had not been washed and the patient’s bedroom needed some cleaning. Patient X had not eaten nor had they taken their medication because he was too sick to get up and his elderly mother too frail to be of much assistance.
Whether it’s minutes or months, hours or days, the time you give really does matter. There are so many opportunities to volunteer with us, and we are always in need of people who can spare some time to help.
